In your own words (200-400 words), (1) summarize the step-by-step process of natural selection that leads to adaptive traits and evolution. (2) To illustrate this process, provide one example of an adaptation and describe how it would have evolved through natural selection. You can use a real example or make up your own,

1. In your first paragraph, describe the general step-by-step process of natural selection that leads to adaptive traits and evolution. (Hint: a complete response will likely include, among others, relevant terms such as ‘mutation’, ‘population’, ‘variation’, ‘competition’, ‘inheritance’, ‘reproductive success’, and ‘the environment’.)
2. In a second paragraph, provide ONE real or made-up example of an adaptation and explain, using the terms above, how it would have evolved by natural selection (again, do not use an example from lecture). It is better to include one very thorough, well-articulated example than several unclear examples.
3. You may do outside research, but we expect the assignment to be written in your own words. Do not copy or plagiarize.
4. Be explicit. Do not leave it to the reader to fill in missing information or concepts. Complete responses will demonstrate an understanding of evolution by natural selection.
