Draft Essay Assignment:
Write a properly formatted draft essay in which you provide an introduction with a strong thesis statement that fully addresses the prompt. Include several body paragraphs where you discuss each of the literary elements that you have chosen to analyze. Finally, finish by writing a concluding paragraph commenting on the impact those individual elements impact the selection as a whole and the selection’s impact on the modern reader.
Submit the rough draft of your formal Literary Analysis Essay based on the selection you chose from Poe, Hawthorne, or Melville.
Introduction:
During Lesson 11, you read selections by Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville. Remember that these three
authors are considered masters of narration. Their use of prose matched with typical elements of fiction
and their highly-regarding individual styles are exemplified within these selections. You will choose one
selection from the required readings in Lesson 11 as the basis for your second literary analysis essay.
Prompt:
From your chosen literary selection by Poe, Hawthorne, or Melville, identify three elements within the
selection that impact the selection as a whole. Using appropriate, convincing rhetoric explain whether or
not each of those elements you have identified are effective or not in relation to the author’s purpose for
writing the selection. Finally, end by discussing the impact the selection has on the modern day reader
even though it was written long ago.
Note:Those elements could include topics from the SOAPS reading guide, elements of fiction, or
elements of style. You are encouraged to pursue those elements as extraneous research to meet the
goal of this writing assignment.
